Today, I said to the Lord that I want to be like David — that shepherd boy who became the King of Israel. I don’t want to be a king or anything, but I do want to be like him, the kid who spent his time with the Lord.
The young man spent his time as a shepherd, worshipping the Lord. He made music and played his stringed instrument for God, He was such a skilful player, the Bible said. Not only pastoring his sheep, it is said of the boy as a man of valour, a man of war, and prudent in speech – proof that he didn’t only talk to his sheep (haha!)
As he got older, David messed up and made some bad choices, but to be honest, who doesn’t? In the Bible, David’s story shows us that no one is perfect, but that the Lord always gives the same chance for everyone to make things right and come back to Him.
Came back stronger, David offered not only his heart, but also his time, mind, and wealth to the Lord. He did a lot of work in preparation for the temple, even though the Lord did not let him build it. He made a sort of blueprint of the temple and gave it to his son Solomon (1Chr 28), donated a lot of money for the construction (1Chr 29), and even organized the Levites singers, priests, musicians, and many other officials (1Chr 23-26), besides his responsibilities as a king, a husband, and a father.
As I prayed to the Lord that I want to be like David, the young shepherd boy that loved the Lord with all his heart, mind, soul, and strength, I decided to start my journey of learning from his legacy of prayer and praise; the psalms of David.
