Blessed day of serving the Lord! How was your service today? Was it great? Did you meet anyone you are thankful for? Or did you encounter a chance to be more loving and patient? It’s almost 10:30 p.m. as I am writing this, and before the day ends, I want to invite you to look at Jesus. Let us look at how Jesus served and ministered, so we can live our lives this week to be more like Him.

I’m sure you all have read John 13. The passage talks about how Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. Jesus did not only wash the feet of some chosen peers in the congregation, but all of His 12 disciples. Some of you are probably thinking about the comparison between your whole church congregation and the disciples during the last supper. It’d be impossible if your pastor washed like hundreds of thousands feet, right? But I’m not going to talk about 12 vs 120 or 1,200. I want us to look at how Jesus served with love and humility.

The 12 disciples were all there in the upper room, I’m saying this because later on someone eventually went. But not in chapter 13, not yet. Jesus knew each one of them. Not only because He’s God, but because He was also a teacher. Jesus spent at least three passover with them, went to cities and villages to preach the kingdom of God, lodged together, probably fasted together, they ate the same food, drank the same water. Probably went to market together, fished and cooked together. Jesus knew each character, each of their strengths and weaknesses. He knew how His disciples had left everything to follow Him, He also knew who plotted something malicious behind His back.

“…rose from supper. He laid aside His outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around His waist. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.”

John 13:4-5 (ESV)

With that full knowledge of Jesus, He still taught all His disciples the same. Jesus did not only display what He wanted His disciples to follow, but also explained why and what they ought to do. The same chance He gave to everyone of them, including the one who was about to leave Him. Jesus did not only see the heart, He wanted His disciples to do the act. Jesus taught them about love and humility wrapped in the holiness of God.

Will there be anything hard for you to face this week? A hopeless soul that makes it hard for you to even smile at? Remember what our Lord has taught us. In God’s holiness, let us serve Him first with love and humility, and so we could serve each other like as Jesus has shown us.
