Dear little ones, let me tell you a short story. A few years ago when I was in my second year during my Church Music studies, I was preparing for a senior ministry recital for voice major. Something that most students would have it in their fourth year. I was struggling so much with it, one thing was because I couldn’t see how I would use all that difficult classical pieces for my future ministry when I get back to Indonesia. At the same time I was in the student council and there were some tricky problems arouse. Very often when I was taking my devotion, I felt the Lord strongly said in my heart: “Smile.” Most of the time there was the only word I heard: “Smile.” I was doubting that voice, I couldn’t see why God told me to smile, that’s probably my own voice. Not until I saw some candid pictures of myself showing me looking sad, ugly, and grumpy. As time went on, I began to see that the only right response I should have given during that time was to smile. God saw everything, and He knew just what I needed.
Have you ever felt like that? Let me share to you one story that shoes a pattern of God’s work, because He sees and He knows.
I’m sure you all are familiar with Abram, the name before God renamed him to Abraham. If we read Genesis 14, we could see that Abram had just won a battle saving his nephew, Lot, that with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah and their wealth were taken by Kedorlaomer and his allies. While the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled (14:10), Abram went in pursuit to take everything that was taken captive. Abram and his people were surely tired. The enemy they faced was the strong Kedorlaomer who had just defeated at least five kingdoms before the king of Sodom and his allies fought him (Gen 14:5-9). Abram won, and by the law of conquest, everything he took away from Kedorlaomer now belonged to him. But what happened next? The king of Sodom came out from his hidey-hole and shamelessly went to Abram asking to give him “his” people and “generously” told Abram that he could keep the goods.
The response of this king gives me an ick. Like, “Hello excuse me, last time your people got taken away and you cowardly run like shadow also cannot see. Now you act blur like nothing happened and still think all these are yours ah? Why you so thick skin saying you want to keep your people and share all the barang-barang to Abram?! YOUR PEOPLE you say?!!! Eh hello! These all belong to Abram!!! You go away sia!” But well, Abram was so patient with him and only asked the share for the people that went with him to the battle.
Abram was already a successful businessman, he had a beautiful wife, probably a thousand–if not more–people under his household, a good name and social status, great friends around him. Abram followed God’s calling to leave his land and go to the unknown place. He was great physically, financially, and spiritually, but Abram was afraid of something he probably didn’t know. Nevertheless, the Lord saw everything and He knew. God told Abram in the following passage: “I am your shield, your very great reward.”
After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:
“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” (Gen 15:1)
God’s promise to Abram made him pour out –if not realized– his burden. For in his response, Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
God saw the fear in Abram. His command to not be afraid was telling Abram that he was afraid even after winning the battle. But there’s a promise that Abram’s reward was not in the possession he conquered, but in the Lord; the Lord saw, and He knew. “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward” was then followed with “Look up at the sky and count the stars–if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be.”
So little ones, are you still doubting God for what He’s telling you to do? God saw Abram and He knew what he needed, God saw me and He told me to do what I should have done. I believe that He sees you too, knows you, and is telling you to do what you’re supposed to do. You might not hear anything in your heart, but you can open your Bible right now and ask, “God, I believe that you see me and You know me. Help me to know You and know what You want me to do. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
I pray that God’s Holy Spirit will guide you as you are seeking Him and willing to walk with Him. For God sees, and He knows!
That’s a tiny little thing for today. I hope you are blessed and share this blessings to others. Let’s walk our little steps together and worship the Lord with all our beings. God bless you!
