“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12
This verse was a part of Moses’ prayer when he was leading the Israelites in the desert of Sinai. When days turned into months, months turned into years, and everything looked the same; all sand and dryness. How do we count our days when nothing seems to change? The answer lays in God, look at Him and His glory. God was working His miracles, He was there with His cloud and fire.
Worshipping God was one of His grand design in creation. God wants us to count the time and days, remember Him, and worship His name. As we are reading in the account of creation, in Genesis 1:14-15 it says,
"And God said, 'Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.' And it was so."
God is the God of Time
There was no count of days before God created the light. The Bible started with God’s revelation of His being and His works (Gen 1:1-2). God has already created the heavens and formless earth, yet there was no mention of the numbered time. The God in the Bible is not a god bound by the time, He is outside the concept of time for He is the One created it. The seconds go to minutes and then hours and days, passing months and years, all are numbered, and we know that numbers have its end. But God has revealed His eternity and that those who live in His will would not be swiped away by time. That is why Jesus said to His followers,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20, NIV
Don’t miss the note that God’s promise to “always be with you” is for you who “go and make disciples, baptizing, and teaching them” also; that was living in God’s will. 1 John 2:17 also tells us, “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” “Lives forever” it says, because God is the God of time, He remains even after this world passes. For that reason, let’s offer all our time to live in God’s will, live to go, preach, and teach the Good News of God; that is our worship.
God is the God of All Season
If God is the God of time, seasons are as well in His hands. From the first day of the creation of the earth until the third day, only God knows the measure of it for there were no signs on the sky to mark it. But in God’s revelation, He wants us to know how to count the days and years and to mark the sacred times.
The word “sacred times” in Genesis 1:14 is taken from the Hebrew word מוֹעֵד moed (or ulemoeadim – plural) meaning the appointed times (and place) for meetings (or gatherings). In the desert, God gave the Israelites appointed times in a year as holy convocations; note that the LORD said to Moses to proclaim those appointed times as the feasts of Him!
Let us turn to our Bible in Leviticus 23. There we could find God’s design of worship in every season of His people. From the season of rest (Sabbath) to the most holy of holies (Day of Atonement), God marks the days and dates for His people to celebrate Him; those are the appointed times to the LORD.
What’s the season in your life right now? Are you in a season of rest? Season of deliverance? Or are you waiting for your firstfruit to be offered to God? Whatever life phase you might be in, let’s remember that our God is the God of all season. Trust and dedicate to the Lord the season in your life as feast to His Holy Name!
"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."
Colossians 3:17, NIV
