In the first day of forever, God has revealed Himself as the initiator, executor, powerful God, and ruler of all things. He even hints it to us the unity of His being, that the living Word of God was there, creating the universe. What will the Bible tells us about God in the second day? These are what I found that I’d gladly share it to you!
And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”
And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters
that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven.
And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
Genesis 1:6-8
God of order
As I was reading about God’s command to separate the waters under and above the expanse, I was struck by an interesting thought. “So everything was water before? Weih, that must be chaotic and suffocating!” I thought. But look at what He has done! How would God think to make an expanse so that the waters could be in order? !
God did not just make the world, but made it orderly. It was the character of God we also find in Paul’s teaching to God’s people in Corinth. In Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” Scene by scene, story by story God puts them well organized to match the whole episode in the creation. This God of order has also given us His order, the authoritative instruction for us to follow His way. Are we coming together to follow Him so that our lives would also be made orderly?
God is incredibly creative
By thinking of God as the God of order, we have seen the creativity and incredibility of God. His work of separating the waters was so extraordinary and impossible. God shows us His power to bring something new into being; something original from His own thoughts. That reminds me of His words in Isaiah 55:8-9 that says:
For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are My ways higher than your ways
and My thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55 is a call to repentance and promise of salvation from the LORD to His people Israel. In verse 6 God calls everyone to seek Him, and for the wicked to forsake their wickedness, and for the unrighteous to leave their thoughts. Though I am not an Israelite, yet as a believer of Jesus, He granted me the crumbs from Israel’s table (Matt 15:26-28).
The Lord called His people to repentance, revealing His thoughts that created the expanse and hold the waters on their position are higher than our thoughts. What we thought was good, it may not good for God’s thoughts. What we thought would bring us to salvation is not what God designs it to be. For this reason, as our act of worship, let us study His words so that we may understand the will of God, His good, pleasing, and perfect will (Rm 12:2).
God is the playwright
Have you been to a performance hall? In theater or musical performances, the opening act traditionally starts with the curtain up and the display of certain designs on the cyclorama to set the narrative. The arrangement of this scene is carefully chosen and arranged by the playwright or director of the drama. Doesn’t it sound similar with what God did in the universe?
Without anyone knew, God was preparing the earth to receive more stuff later on; the various designs God was going to make on the cyclorama. The birds on the sky, fish in the waters, plants and vegetations on the dry land, and man in God’s own image and likeness will be created orderly later on in this empty framework. Doesn’t this all make us wonder what God will do in our lives if we humbly come to Him and let His thoughts lead us?
“Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near;
let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon."
Isaiah 55:6-7
