As many Christians talk about worship and what we should do in worship, let us go to something earlier than that. Why do we worship?

It is impossible for humans to know God unless He reveals Himself to us, and the Lord has revealed Himself by His Holy Spirit through the Bible. Let us read from the beginning and start with the Book of Genesis. The Book of Genesis tells us that everything we see and imagine begins with the Lord.

From the two first verses of the Bible, there are four things I learn about who God is and it gives me the reason to worship Him. The revelation of God that I want to share to you now is:

God is the Creator

The Hebrew text tells us that Elohim created the heavens and the earth using a special choice of word, “create,” which is attributed only to God. This first sentence of the Bible affirms that everything is from God, through God, and for God. Even when the earth was in a state of confusion, God made every beautiful thing out of it. He made the impossible possible.

The statement that God is the Creator inspired Paul in his letter to the people in Colossae chapter 1 verse 16,

God created the heavens, earth, and all that exists, including the seen and unseen realms (I’m sure it’s including technology!). Shouldn’t this motivate us to use everything that God gives us to bring glory to His name?

God is everlasting

The phrase “In the beginning God created…” tells us that God existed before the beginning. He has no beginning nor end and exists infinitely through time. God was there even before the creation of the universe and continues to exist. His existence extends from the infinite past to the infinite future. Therefore, if we believe in Him as the everlasting God, why should we worry about the future? God is already present there.

God is Sovereign

God’s authority is absolute and He is not bound by anything. Time and dimension, chaos and darkness have no power over Elohim. He existed before the beginning of time and time itself is held in His hands. When the Bible tells us that “The earth was formless and empty” and “Darkness was over the surface of the deep,” can you imagine how dark the deep was that the surface of the deep was already so dark? Yet, the Spirit of God was hovering over it.

The darkness could not contain Him for His supreme authority, and we who have received Jesus are given the grace to become the children of God (Jn 1:12). It is the gift for us to no longer walk in the darkness but in the light that produces all goodness, righteousness, and truth (Eph 5:8-10). Thus, living as children of light is a form of worship that pleases God.

God is the Savior

When I read this part: “The earth was formless and empty,” I couldn’t imagine how the world we know now would have looked like without any shape. The name was “earth”, but it was formless and empty, which sounded chaotic and hopeless. However, the Spirit of God came and hovered over the surface of the darkness. God came into the chaos to save the messy world and make it beautiful, creating a new creation. This is one of the characters of God. He is the Savior. Later on, after the man He created made a mess and put the world in chaos again, He gave His promise for His coming as a Savior because that is who He is.

Jesus came in human flesh to give us the example of obedience so that whoever believes in Him, has their relationship restored with God, and they will be a new creation (2Cor 5:17). Salvation is not just an act of God, but an essential part of His identity as the Savior. If we turn to Him in faith, He can make all things new – no matter how messy our lives are.

God has made Himself known to us since the beginning of the creation, and as we continue our lives in this world He created, let us live our lives as our worship to Him to whom everything belongs. Maranatha!
