“We are all called to experience God.” This thought came to me around three years ago during my final year at the seminary. Although I wasn’t sure what it meant at the time, I knew it was what God wanted me to reflect on as I approached the end of my four-year study. Three years later, I was guided by the Holy Spirit to prepare teaching material from 1 John 1:1-3, and it was only then that I remembered what I had written.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:1-3 (NIV)
Have you heard of the ice-breaking game called ‘Two Truths and a Lie’? The game involves each person in the group taking turns to tell three things about themselves, and the rest of the team would guess which of the three is the lie. Unless you are an expert at lying, it’s easier to tell others about your experiences or the truth about yourself. By playing this game, group members usually get to know each other better or have fun listening to each other’s facts. Shouldn’t sharing about Jesus be just as fun?
As believers, we are all familiar with the call to “Go, Preach, and Teach,” also known as the Great Commission. This mandate is not limited to pastors or missionaries, but applies to all who follow Jesus. However, how can we effectively preach and teach if we are not familiar with Jesus’ teachings? According to the Apostle John, our first step should be to establish a fellowship with God, and only then can we share what we have learned.
The purpose of John’s testimony is “So that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.” Something caught my attention as I read that passage. Do you remember in the account of creation, the LORD God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (v26) and “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (v27)? Being in fellowship with our Creator is one of the traits of being “in the image of God”.
In the Trinity, there exists an eternal fellowship, and humans were created to be a part of this fellowship. Just like Adam, Eve, and God, we were meant to enjoy a close relationship with one another and with God. However, this fellowship was broken as a result of human sin. But the good news is that Jesus came to restore this brokenness so that those who believe in Him can once again experience the fellowship with one another and with God the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear brothers and sisters, as we begin a new week, let us strive to strengthen our fellowship with one another and live by God’s words. Just like John the Apostle, we should aim to experience the living word of God – to hear, see and touch it, so that it comes alive in our lives. And then, with joy in our hearts, let us share this experience with the world, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.
Have a wonderful week and may God bless you!
