So God created man in His own image,
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:27 (ESV)

Isn’t it incredible to consider how the LORD created man and woman in His own image? He breathed His breath into them, making man in His likeness so that they could have a relationship with Him. The Lord adorned them with His glory and holiness, empowering them to fulfill His purpose on the earth He has fashioned.

“And behold, it was very good!”

The Bible tells us how God placed Adam and his wife in the beautiful Garden of Eden, where they had an abundance of fresh and healthy fruits for their daily meals. They had access to a variety of delicious fruits such as papaya, apple, durian, mango, grapes, peaches, kiwi, and many more. It must have been a paradise for fruit lovers!

In addition to enjoying the bounties of nature, Adam’s first task was to name all the animals. He had the fun job of naming cute little animals like kittens and bears, mighty elephants, tall giraffes, soft little lambs, strong goats, noisy crickets, and loud tigers. It must have been a fun and exciting experience for Adam and the animals.

It is easy to imagine that the animals loved Adam too, and were excited to have him as their human friend. The Garden of Eden was a perfect place, where everything was flawless and beautiful.

“And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”

Genesis 1:31 (ESV)

We do not know how long Adam and Eve enjoyed the Garden of Eden, walking with their Creator and having perfect friendships with other creatures. However, one day everything changed.

“Because you have done this”

Adam was present when Eve conversed with the snake, but he didn’t appear to be bothered by it. Did the LORD create animals smarter than humans? Was it possible for mammals to speak human language? There is no mention of such occurrences in the Bible. However, we do know how the serpent tempted Eve to eat from the forbidden tree – the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

Genesis 2:16-17 (ESV)

Adam appeared to be fine with Eve’s conversation, as well as her decision to take and eat the fruit. He made no attempt to stop his wife from taking the fruit from the tree that the Lord had specifically commanded them not to touch. Adam himself also took the fruit from Eve and ate it. Despite the abundance of perfect things that the LORD had freely given to them, they chose the only thing that the LORD had forbidden. As a result, the earth grew dark, and the glory of the LORD that clothed them became torn. Their eyes were opened, and they suddenly realized that they were naked.

The LORD witnessed everything that Adam and Eve did, but He did not interfere. He had given them all the best things they needed to be satisfied, but they were not content. He had spoken His loving words to them, but they did not remember them. He wanted them to choose Him, but they did not. Nevertheless, He sought them out, listened to their words, and showed them His compassion.

The peaceful garden was now shaken, sin had brought death to its curse. Not because God is not a loving Creator, but because man had chosen their destiny. The consequence of their disobedience was death, as the Lord had said. The word of the Lord is forever and He is faithful to His promise, if He doesn’t, He is not God. But as we read further into the story, the Lord gave them clothes from animal’s skin. There was death. Blood has been shed, all because man sinned.

The Promise of Hope

And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

Genesis 3:21 (ESV)

It was a difficult day for all of creation. Fear gripped everyone, and hearts were pounding loudly. The land was cursed, animals lost their kin, and man’s sin had separated them from God. However, nothing was too difficult for the Creator. The loving Father of all never lost His way to save. He gave a promise of salvation, and the first act He did was to remove the man and his wife from the tree of life. The LORD did not want the man He created to live eternally in sin.

And that was the reason Jesus came. First Corinthians 15:21-22 says, “For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” The promise of hope has been fulfilled. Death has lost its sting. The cross of Christ is a showcase of God’s love for all He has created.

“He Himself bore our sins” in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by His wounds you have been healed.”
