Everybody worships. If it’s not about God, it must be about something else on earth. It could be ideology, art-forms, persons, or beauty. Many people in history had died in fighting for their freedom, sacrifice their life in the name of ideology. Artists spend their youth practicing their arts, pouring their dreams, energy, and money to create beauty. Concert goers work hard to have enough money to buy tickets, come in their best attire, raising their hands as the music plays as if it is the one satisfies their soul. Isn’t it worship? What about Christianity? Do we come to church and worship the way the world worships their lord? How are we different?

The decoration team should give their best in arranging the flowers on the altar, changing the parament according to the liturgical color, so that the congregation could pay attention more to the service. The worship team should give their excellence in playing the music, the choir, singers and worship leaders should have memorize their songs so the congregation could be led in presenting their praise to the Lord. Wait, do they present it to the Lord or to the congregation who barely know the song? Hmm, to whom do they address their worship?

The church altar should not be a stage to perform, it should be used for the leaders to conduct the congregation in one voice presenting their worship to the Lord. The opening words, prayers, songs, and physical expression should be offered as one unity as the pleasing aroma to the Lord. But are we aware that not all Christian songs are about God?

While still mentioning God or the name of the Lord, some people fail to recognise that many songs sung in church are about ourselves. Yes God is good, but what kind of goodness He shows? Yes God hears our prayers, but what about the holiness of God that not everyone’s prayer pay God’s attention? Do we see God’s revelation in the worship or are we just pouring our emotion like in some music concert, feeling relieved of crying and singing (read: praising) and then exhausted during the sermon? Are we sure we worship the Lord and not our needs?

Worship starts with God and it should be addressed to Him.

"For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him."
Colossians 1:16
